Look at those lines

By now, most of you must know how much I love architecture. And I love more than just beautiful high rise buildings and wonderful modern compemtorary homes. But this building pictured above is a different type of masterpiece, and it strikes a different chord with me. This is the new science building at school. It's pretty much brand new and holds a LEED silver certification. I hand a class in this building a few quarters ago and it was a pleasant experience. Your surroundings can certainly affect your perception, and I enjoy seeing this building as well as studying within it.

In other unrelated news, the San Franscisco Giants swept the Texas Rangers today 9-0.

Today was the first game in the world series between the San Franscisco Giants and the Texas Rangers. The Giants won 11 to 7.

The 7 habits.

I understand this isn't a great photo in the traditional sense. But sometimes the things that inspire us don't have color, or a physical outline. I find much inspiration in books. The 7 habits of highly effective people is a must read for anyone looking to improve themselves.

Night owls.

Walking around Emily's house, you can see owls everywhere in every room - on the walls, bookshelves, toilet and stove. They come in all shapes and sizes, and each find has a unique story about it's origin. The funny thing is, Emily doesn't remember why she started collecting owls. But her 100+ owl collection is constantly growing. And if you listen closely, you might hear them calling in the dead of night.

I'd rather be a killer whale.

This is the killer whale sculpture in downtown Vancouver right on the water front. It's in the same area as the olympic torch. This photo shows a close up of this beautiful sculpture and how it's made of "digital" cubes, just like a giant Lego set. If you have a chance, I would highly recommend going there on a sunny day.

Evel Knievil.

We spotted this Harley Davidson rider on the Interstate today. He was wearing an Evel Knievel costume and a green wig over his helmet. This was just after we listened to a piece on NPR about Harley Davidson Motorcycles as an icon of the American experience.

High rise love.

My love for architecture was well fulfilled today with all the beautiful high rise buildings in Vancouver. Everywhere you look you can see wonderful new towers sculpting the skyline.

Olympic torch

This is the Olympic Torch in Vancouver BC. It's a beautiful structure. Too bad they dont keep it lit.

Free the Internet

When I am at home, or at work, I truly take for granted my constant access to the Internet. But when I travel, I feel the extent of my dependancy to stay connected. Seeing 20 wifi networks that I can't connect to is a major bummer. Would it be so wrong if I check my email on your network? Would I be imposing if I just quickly look for a place to get food on your Internet connection? It's not like I would be knocking on your door at two in the morning to use your computer.

But seriously, why are so many people and businesses so protective of their Internet connection? I personally believe that everyone should have access to the rest of the world through the internet. Support knowledge, communication, and the right to free Internet!

I would like to hear what you have to say about this topic. Please leave your comments. Thank you.

I couldn't resist

Wow. I laughed so hard when I saw this. I, like many other people around the world, am highly anticipating the release of the Nikon D7000 DSLR camera. There is much speculation about the official release date of the camera. And I think this video is a great illustration of how much anticipation there really is for this camera.

Vegatable planter 01

Here's a quick vegetable planter box I designed today. Measuring 22 feet long, it has ample room for vegetables and will receive plenty of sunlight because of it's East-West positioning.

Container Home 02

I had some fun today designing another container home. This one I imagined overlooking the ocean and 100 feet away from a cliff that drops to the beach. It is made of eleven 40' shipping containers arranged in a contemporary fashion. The home is three stores, four bedrooms, three bath with a grass roof and view of the ocean.

This rear view shows how the house takes advantage of the view of the ocean. I added more glass the this part of the home for the view, but also to allow maximum sunlight exposure into the home. The backyard also features a lap pool facing the ocean.

In this top view photo, you can see how the lap pool lines up with the edge of the home and the "step down" look of the containers and floors of the home.

Doggie Daycare

We normally have at least one or two dogs at work on any given day. But today, we had four. There were dogs of all sizes running every which way, chasing delivery drivers and barking while I was on the phone. Normally I wouldn't be such a hater, but I think because I'm not allowed to have a dog of my own, other people's dogs don't seem as cute and cuddly.

For more information about my future dog click here.

I got some photo inspiration in Jesse's room today. He used a Rod Stewart record sleeve to obtain a certain type on sound on his snare drum.

Container Home 01

Today, I decided to design a single family home made of recycled shipping containers. I spent a little time designing the structure and layout which you can see in the sketches. Then I started rendering a 3D model in Google Sketch Up. It's not finished but I was excited about the progress I made.
